Travelling is exploring a place, maybe new or old, for some length especially to gain new experiences and knowledge. Through travel, one might gain knowledge, meet new people and get to spend a leisure time. However, before reading the book “Travel as a political act”, I viewed travelling as a form of recreational escapism — taking a break from one’s usual mundane routine. Now, I believe that there is more to travelling. I can gain a whole new level of experiences and knowledge, and, at the same time, enjoy the trip. Travelling is about expanding your perspectives and questioning your perceptions. A good travel requires an open mind. Also, we should share our experiences with others after returning back from travel.
Travel can be used as a political act. This means that it will help us to shape our perceptions regarding the world in a better and more open way. This can be done by choosing to travel in purpose. Before starting your journey, we can choose to broaden our perspectives personally, culturally and politically. This will help us realize that there are other alternatives to how we see the world and the cultural aspects of it. While travelling, connect with more people and let them talk about their culture. Also, be open to new experiences. Be very careful while making any assumptions about what to expect to encounter abroad. Keep in mind that history is very important. While travelling, there will be a lot of opportunities to enjoy history. Overcoming fear is very important to use travel as a political act.
