“The Shunwei China Venture Capital Podcast” is the first podcast from the VC circle in China, and it is an English podcast. Your current host is Adam Bao. He grew up in U.S. and graduated from Yale University. He used to work for a British AR Unicorn Company, Blippar. As a young man who learns a bit about both the eastern and western cultures and is curious about innovation, Adam hopes that the world could know more about China with his dialogs with the top science and technology researchers, entrepreneurs and investors from China.
After being a land of “copycat” for many years, China sees the rapid growth of innovation on science and technology and the business model. This is phenomenon known to the world. We wish to explore it and show the “innovation secrets” to the world through our podcast for the first time.
There are 6 episodes made till now, in which there are dialog with Shunwei Capital Partner, Cheng Tian and Vice President/EIR (Entrepreneur In Residence), Meng Xing, discussions with the founder of Shunwei Portfolio Omni prime, Hu Dan and the founder of Vericant, Guy Sivan. There are also dialogs with many other excellent investors and entrepreneurs outside Shunwei Capital.
This podcast will be updated constantly. We welcome all the entrepreneurs and investors who would like to share with Adam and the world about your ideas to come to us!
In our first episode, Adam discusses the broad social, economic, institutional and financial elements that form the current VC environment in China with vice president of Shunwei Capital/EIR, Meng Xing. In the podcast, we discuss such issues as follows:
- Why compared to the start-from-scratch innovation (from 0 to 1), Chinese entrepreneurs are better at following up and expand testified models (from 1 to N)?
- For Chinese entrepreneurs, what are the incentives for them to start?
- Why is there a lack of middle management talent in the Chinese startup team?
- Why are there so many unicorns in all kinds of seemingly niche markets in China?
- Why are there giant and diversified platforms like BAT (Baidu, Alibaba and Tencent)?
In addition, we also look into AI, AR/VR and other cutting-edge technology and share successful innovation business models that have turned technology into products, in which there are some novel cases that have not even appeared in the U.S.
Meng Xing, Vice President of Shunwei Capital/EIR, has invested in the cutting-edge areas such as AI, robots, AR/VR, etc. In the last decade, he established two AI startups, and were separately purchased by Amazon and a listed company in China. Meng Xing was also once in charge of the Asian Pacific interactive entertainment business of one of the largest American gaming corporations, CAESARS ENTERTAINMENT, and worked in the investment bank department of J.P. Morgan Chase & Co. Meng Xing has the bachelor degrees of Applied Mathematics and Economics of University of California, Berkeley, as well as the MBA degree of MIT Sloan School of Management.
