Lets imagine a hypothetical scenario where your organisation has introduced some new digital features at an event and you want to develop an understanding of what your audiences want.

Goal: Devise a strategy for user research to understand the impact of digital features at an event

Digital features to be reviewed by users:

  1. A software that allows users to participate in live polls during a conference and ask questions
  2. Screens in the venue lobbies with a rotation of information which shows;

a. A list of guests who checked in

b. Live Twitter board

c. Travel updates

I would adopt a multi method approach to develop an understanding of user behaviour which involves on-site feedback from users.

  1. Enable on-site feedback on the poll software for users to choose one word options from a dropdown menu and/or give a star rating to share their feedback. This method is easy to use and time efficient.
  2. Conduct video interviews with users to ask them questions about;

a. Their experience of being at the event,

b. Feedback on the various digital features,

The videos can be editted and made into a short film to share with the wider business.

3. Introduce gamification and inspire users to tweet to about the event by using a hashtag. The one with the maximum number of tweets will be win a prize. This method will enable us to use Twitter analytics to see behaviour and attitudinal trends. It will also facilitate engagement and publicity.

4. Devise a short 4–5 question survey that can be taken on an ipad and ask researchers to collect feedback at the event. This method will ensure that users share their ‘live experience’ of being at the event.

Next steps: I would collect all the data to join the dots and weave a story from the user’s perspective. The storytelling will be made richer with a video of users who participated in the event.
