No Flash No Bang

“Would you like me to take your picture?” (c) Watanabe Katsumi

I should’ve joined the paparazzi a long time ago. I thought people would be intimidated and annoyed with the flash style. Au contraire, they love the light. Who knew?

Majority of folks love to get their photo taken. Which works well cause I love shooting them. When you’re happy, I’m happy.

I’ve long admired legendary photographers like the late Bill Cunningham and Jonny Nunez for spreading joy through photos. A recent inspiration is Japanese street shooter Watanabe Katsumi. He captured Tokyo’s underground club scene masterfully from the 60's through early 80's.

Watanabe was 100% for the culture. He went out nightly documenting the scene until his work was a staple. I’m hoping to do the same for this generation.
