Negative take by the author. Admittedly, some may have hadcultural misunderstandings and intentions, maybe even a false sense of what the societies are about. But at the same time, how does one learn about different cultures if one is not willing to go see them firsthand and, it is hoped that, overcome false understandings and move to a deeper one, one that appreciates the differences. After living in Africa for two years, I have come learned a lot and have come to realize my shortcomings in understanding the culture I lived. How can that be a bad thing, particularly in the present day U.S. where a growing fear of “the other” seems to have taken hold.
