Daniel, your original post inspired me to start thinking of what a possible alternative interface for Google Images would consist of; then I saw this and it got me thinking:
Is it possible that you have inadvertently stumbled upon one of the fundamental differences between Android and iOS? Apple’s design philosophy is known to be more minimalist (“easier to use”) because they “know best” what the user needs and wants. Google’s platform has always differentiated itself by offering more options, customization, and “features” at the (possible) expense of usability.
So, even though you may be on to something regarding overflow menus perhaps in some cases it cuts into the core philosophies of the applications you are critiquing? Just a thought.
Even so, I do think there is some room for improvement — after all, design is never “done,” right?
