A Street Guide to Feminism
Jessica Wildfire

I dig this.

I remember during my teen years (20 years ago — oy) when I was militantly Afrocentric and believed the bullshit about “Feminism being destructive”. As it happens, this was also the same time I came across Black Panther co-founder Huey P. Newton’s famous speech calling for unity between the Black Power, Women’s Lib, and Gay Rights movements (as they were called at the time). To this day, it remains one of my favorite political speeches — I even read it during an event once.

What I love most about that speech is that Newton blatantly calls out the fact that any man who has a problem with women’s rights is a dude with major insecurities to work through. The world needs Feminism for the same reason it needs Afrocentrism, LGBTQ+ equality, and all the other rights that Straight/cis/White/hetero Christian guys take for granted.

I still proudly think of myself as Afrocentric. I’d like to think of myself as a Feminist, but… I know the term “male feminist” has been corrupted by the same shitheads who ruined the term “nice guy”.
