Black Lives Matter vs. All Lives Matter

It’s important for the people with the most amount of privilege to support and advocate for those with the least.

Do not answer your friend who says ‘Black lives matter’ with ‘All lives matter’. The correct response is ‘Yes, you are right’.

At that point it is okay to add ‘and Muslim lives matter, Gay lives matter, Poor lives matter, Abused lives matter, Trans lives matter, and Oppressed lives matter’.

Once you have said this, either to yourself or your friend, you can be more confident you actually support all lives mattering.

You may wonder what the big difference is, but if you stop for a moment, you will realize not all people are in fact treated like they matter. Many are treated like they matter less, as we have repeatedly seen in cases of murder, brutality and oppression against Blacks, Muslims, Gay and Trans people, as well as many other marginalized people.

These are the very groups of people that deserve and demand our support and advocacy (from the often silent yet comfortable majority) so that true equality is finally achieved.
