Life After Microsoft — A New Beginning After a Layoff

Imagine the surprise of #Microsoft employees in marketing and sales who were delivered the news that their jobs and their services would no longer be needed, after investing their time, energy and sweat equity for however many years of service? Now, they are dealt an unexpected surprise right in the heart of the summer.

After news like this and the # JuneJobsReport, it may at times appear that bad things happen to good people who do great work. However, I invite you to think about this: this is not a setback, but this is a setup for a come back.

Three suggestions for all of the Microsoft employees in sales and marketing who just received this news:

Find your purpose. Decide today what the next role, gig, or opportunity in life you want to go after. I know you have bills to pay, school to finish, or a business you want to start. Now is the time to really find that purpose and go after it like never before. And if you decide to put your resume out on the street, just remember: you worked for one of the top 5 most recognized brands in the world, and somebody’s going to want your skill set. But don’t just settle for a job; find the thing that is purposeful and fulfilling.

There’s going to be a lot of emotional fallout. I know you’ve already heard: it’s not personal; it’s business. However, you’re going to experience a lot of personal feelings about what’s happened. Feel the emotion, experience the emotion, and let it go. Turn the page. Don’t hang yourself up on why, what, who, when.

Take a sheet of paper, write down every emotion that you have as it relates to being dealt this news, and then after you write it down, get a match and burn it up. The moment that paper burns up, you are letting go whatever negative feelings you had as it relates to just leaving Microsoft.

There are only two things you do in life: you leave, and you enter. Letting go will allow you to fully and peacefully leave Microsoft and prepare yourself to enter into your next chapter. How you leave a situation, no matter how bad it is, will determine how you enter the next season.

Decide that your best days are in front of you. The future is created in the present. And when you understand that the future is created in the present, how you do ANYthing is how you do EVERYthing. Decide tomorrow morning, as you start a brand new day: how are you going to put one foot in front of the other? How are you going to read, re-skill, reimagine the new career or life that awaits you?

Decide and live with expectation that you are going to make today better than yesterday. The further away you get from what has happened-which is devastating and initially is like a death-recognize that who you are is bigger than what you do. You are not a name on a business card. You are not a title or a position. You are indeed, O Brilliant One!

Here is a shot in the arm of inspiration to remind you that you that letting go is a part of manifesting your full brilliance!
