Social media: What options do schools have?

My experience is that at a system level, Tasmania public education, social media is treated as a head in the sand area. It must be avoided at all costs, no chance of being used in a positive way. Facebook is out and out banned and haven’t see twitter in use. These are such great tools that could help and enhance learning, or at least engagement with the learning process, yet these are treated and made into tools of distraction. Ban anything and then watch it become used even more, but surreptitiously. Make it social media, not unsocial media, by what we as educators and the systems we work within do with it, use it for, and how we treat it. It is time we brought social media in from the dark.
