Sticks and Stones

“Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words can never hurt me.”

Why do we teach this to children? Why do we begin to lie to them at such a young age? Is it supposed to make it easier to lie to ourselves, because it doesn’t, no matter how many times we tell ourselves that.

“Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words can never hurt me.”

Bones heal and blood clots. Physical wounds disappear over time. We can reset your broken bone, cast it, and let it heal. That deep cut will clot and can be sewn up. Our body will dissolve those stitches. We can bandage up our scrapped knee and that black eye will fade.

“Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words can never hurt me.”

Words can bruise, wound, and destroy more than any physical force. Its words that can break the strongest of us down to nothing and leave us a mere shell of who we once were. Words break our spirit, not our bones. Words change us more then anything else.

“Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words can never hurt me.”

Words leave permanent damage, that no one can see. Pain inflicted by words cannot be treated. You can’t bandage, brace, or sew it up and watch it mend. Time may dull the pain, but nothing repairs the damage.

“Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words can never hurt me.”

It is the emotionally abused, the verbally assaulted, the ignored, and the scapegoat that long for a bump, a bruise, a slap, a cut. At least then you would see how hurt and broken they are. At least then they could point and say, “it hurts there.” They could say, “this is why I hurt.”

“Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words can never hurt me.”

Today is your birthday. Today I can’t call and tell you how much I love and miss you. I can’t hug you or kiss you. Not because you are gone. Not because there is an ocean between us. Because I’m scared to hear your voice.

“Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words can never hurt me.”
