Proposed Virginia legislation for School Bathrooms

The Virginia House of Delegates is considering legislation that requires locker rooms, showers and restrooms to be based on anatomical and biological sex, not sexual identity. Religious and conservative groups support the bill, HB781, but many individuals in the transgender community feel that this bill would create intolerance. HB781 passed in the House General Rules subcommittee.

William and Mary Student Positive for Zika Virus

Recently, one of Virginia’s most well-known academic institutes saw a case of Zika virus among one of their own students. The student traveled to Central America over winter break. The college released a statement saying the student was recovering and that the W&M health department says there is no immediate health risk to others on campus.

Lack of Funding Caused Backlogging of Virginia Rape Evidence Tests

After a sexual assault is reported, the victim completes a rape kit to test for physical evidence to identify attackers. However, the Virginia Department of Forensic Science lost necessary funding and left more than 2,000 of these kits untested. Attorney General Mark herring is working toward a grant to test these kits as soon as possible to give some peace and closure to victims of this merciless crime.
