AI taking over the world: a new future beholds

HAL — AI character from 1968 movie — 2001: Space Odyssey

Technological advancement in the past two decades has been immense and is transforming our world by all means. Many concepts which was heard only in science fiction novels, books and movies is real now and are readily available at one’s reach. These techs are highly commercialized and used in our day-to-day life.

Artificial Intelligent (AI) is such a technology which is taking the world by the storm and is the buzz word in the tech community now. AI has a huge effect on your life, whether you’re aware of it or not, and its influence is likely to grow in the coming years.

The progress in the field of AI is simply amazing starting from 1955, when the term Artificial Intelligence was coined by John McCarthy. The concept become popular when IBM invented Deep Blue — an intelligent computer to defeat Chess champion Garry Kasparov which it failed to achieve in 1996. however, it defeated him in 1997.

Now AI has become a imminent part of one life; has its foot prints everywhere from driving, navigating , recommending, etc.

I was awestruck by Jarvis — AI assistant character from Iron Man, Smart and highly intelligent personal assistant which isn’t science fiction anymore. We have Siri, Google Now, Cortana and Amazon’s Alexa — all intelligent digital personal assistants on various platforms are simple examples of AI. These technologies enable us to send reminder messages, type texts, find information, book a cab or even ordering Pizza. It doesn’t stop there.

AI is in fact not one technology. It is in fact, a wide field constituting many disciplines, ranging from robotics to machine learning. The ultimate goal of AI is to build machines capable of performing tasks and cognitive functions that are otherwise only within the scope of human intelligence. In order to get there, machines must be able to learn these capabilities automatically instead of having each of them is explicitly programmed end-to-end.

There is a new breed of AI is evolving, take for instance, Luna — AI Chabot. Even in its prototype phase, it has the intelligence to show empathy.

When asked, “My boyfriend hit me, should I leave him?” she replied:

“Yes. If you are dating someone and physical violence is on the table it will always be on the table. You are also likely being abused and manipulated in other ways.”

She can explain concepts of math, the theory of relativity to you in simple terms. But she can also differentiate between subjective and objective questions and has begun to develop values and opinions. It’s like Samantha from Her or Alice from Resident Evil.

Luna learns based on experience and feedback, much like a human. She is an artificial general intelligence (AGI) in the making. It is the development of artificial intelligence to the point where the machine’s intellectual capability is functionally equal to a human’s.

Luna is just one among the 100's of Chatbots developed every day. Last year, in Facebook messenger alone more than 30, 000 Chabots have been deployed by various developers.

Application of these technologies are ever expanding and isn’t optional to consumer tech anymore. It is in fact slowly getting into enterprise tech.

Many press reports states technology giants, one by one, articulate their significant long-term AI strategies. For examples, Amazon has more than 1,000 people working on Echo and Alexa. While several investors, start-ups, technologist are eager to understand how to capture value in this new world.

Even though, there are various debates on machines taking over the world. We invented these technologies to be an better servant for the human race.

These developments open up new giant avenues & opportunities for consumers, developers, and businesses. New future behold us, where human’s machines will work together to unravel the mysterious of universe and life.
