One Week Ago Today… Victory!! We celebrate Mohamed Soltan’s release, but there is still much work to be done…
Mohamed Soltan’s release from Egyptian prison is a victory, but at the same time it is a reminder that there are thousands more Egyptian civilians who have not been so fortunate. There is still much work to be done for freedom, democracy, human rights, and social justice in Egypt.
After being imprisoned in Egypt for over a year for participating in peaceful protests, 27-year-old Egyptian American activist Mohamed Soltan was released last Saturday, May 30 and returned home to the U.S. this week.
Mohamed Soltan’s homecoming was a sweet victory for the Egyptian people who are working so diligently for freedom and democracy there and also for the human rights activists and organizations who have been advocating for his release.
Thank you to all who have supported the #FreeSoltan campaign, signed petitions, lobbied Capitol Hill, and advocated for his relief and safe return home to the U.S. His commitment to nonviolence and a hunger strike that surpassed 365 days is truly moving… #FreeSoltan now #SoltanIsFree!
But there is still much work to be done…
Thousands more Egyptian civilians have been imprisoned, tortured, and killed for their participation in peacefully protesting military regime leader el-Sisi and his illegal military coup which took away Egypt’s first every democratically elected president.
Recently Gandhi’s Be Magazine and Gandhi Global Center for Peace joined Egyptians Abroad for Democracy Worldwide, CODEPINK, and other human rights activists and organizations around the world to take a stand against the escalating violence that is taking place in Egypt since January 25, 2015 (the fourth anniversary of the Egyptian Revolution and move toward democracy for the first time ever).
