What does a smart 2016 Catholic Voter look like…

So I feel the need to write what needs to be said for Catholic voters who are really being put to the test. Although I’ve devoted more of my time to higher education and technology, I feel the need say what needs to be said. (Disclaimer: to not hide my leanings, I tend to identify as a Catholic Democrat).

I know leaders in the church, as well as the one Catholic (conservative-from Alabama) tv station, talk about the non-negotiables for Catholics which is why we cannot vote for Democrats at all. This has forced many Catholics to vote for Republicans… but at what price? You hope they do something on the moral issues, which leads to failed Supreme Court decision, that then leads to (stereotypically) cuts to help people in need of government support (enter Catholic social teaching here).

Let’s also talk coincidental political viewpoints. Isn’t it also interesting that we as a religious group are getting more firm on being republican as our income has grown. According to the National Catholic Reporter, Catholic family income of $40,000 or more was just at a third in 1987 and now it’s over 60% in 2011.

At the end of the day, I am not telling you not to vote for Trump, or vice versa. I am just calling on us as Catholics to start fighting for candidates that actually promote both Catholic social teachings and protecting human life at all levels and in a research based practical approach. We have to stop choosing the lesser of two evils, and actually create a movement shift. This is the perfect time to do it as the two party system is starting to shift. (Insert someone wondering why conservative business leaders are backing Hillary).

I have to say this one last thing… you should be just as afraid of being arrested by one who bans an entire religious population as you currently are by a liberal who wants equal values for the LGBTQ community. (For those who know me, yes; this worrying comment from someone actually happened and I needed to find a way to correct this) We need to create a new narrative that makes sense to protect freedom of speech and religion while also defending the faith. Any political science major can show you their passion of their beliefs, but also tell you how to actually promote change in public policy.

With that I go to sleep and listen to another episode of morning joe hearing that Trumps campaign is dead and Hillary still doesn’t know how to use email. Our children are really gonna think that we bad crazy when we were younger.
