Steve Googoo

Rising to the Challenge

As a Waycobah First Nation band councillor, NSCC alum Steven Googoo is no stranger to making difficult decisions.

“I’m part of a council that governs just over 1,000 people,” he says. “At the end of the day we’re trying to focus on economic development, housing and families — we try to make the best decisions we can to make the community better for everyone.”

Before getting into politics, Steven’s education challenged him to step outside his comfort zone — something that would have a lasting impact on him personally and professionally. In 2010, he graduated from NSCC’s Business Administration program at the Strait Area Campus in Port Hawkesbury- an experience he recalls fondly.

“I remember the first time I showed up to NSCC, I was late for orientation,” says Steven. “There were 35 of us in the room and one of the faculty asked me to introduce myself in front of everyone.”

Steven recalls how nervous he was speaking to a large group of people. These days, he’s often called upon to do so.

As a band councillor, he’s committed to putting in the hard work to make a positive impact in the lives of others — a vision he says NSCC shares.

“I respect what NSCC stands for: diversity, community and family. We’re on the same page.”
