The casual acceptance of cruelty by privileged people.
The other day, I was scrolling through my Facebook feed when I came across something from someone called The Savvy Couple. It was a story post that said this:
Now, their picture was different. It had the exact words but expressed them as a graph. Struggle now was an uphill curve, and enjoy now was a downhill curve on the graph, with the X-Axis representing time ( as in age in your life). I searched for it online, but it vanished once I clicked on it. I should have saved it, but I didn’t.
However, I remember reading the lines and seeing that picture, which made me rather angry. Why shouldn’t the graph be a straight line? Life should be enjoyable at all phases, from a young age to your twenties and all the way to your retirement years. Why do we have to preach a gospel of up-front suffering?
It is not just “The Savvy Couple”. The whole “FIRE” (Financial Independence / Retire Early) is predicated on living very frugally while young, hoping to become wealthy and retiring early. Dave Ramsey preaches the same thing on his broadcasts with his pay-cash philosophy. Ramsey is particularly harsh on young people — and I think he is out of touch…
