Films That Would Look Great in Black & White
Some more recent films that might look cool with the absence of color.
I love black & white films, photography, and even cookies. There’s something about the absence of color that makes things a little more mysterious, old fashioned, and sometimes a little more honest. Recently, George Miller expressed a desire to release Mad Max: Fury Road in black & white. While I don’t think that film would benefit much from such a change, it got me thinking about other films that were released in color that I would love to see in black & white. Here’s five! Keep in mind, I’m not saying that I wish the original versions didn’t exist. I’m just saying that I would like to these versions of these films as well as the ones that we already got.
5. Moonrise Kingdom

It’s almost a crime to rob a Wes Anderson film of it’s bright and beautiful colors, but I would be intrigued to see this film in black & white. This films talks about childhood, family, love, depression and so much more! I think that this addition would make the movie feel like it was legitimately released a long time ago in black & white.
4. Batman Begins

This film is about old school criminals who are forced to fight a new type of hero. I think that the absence of color would enhance these themes. Like I said I don’t wish that the color version didn’t exist, but if it didn’t imagine this: We watch Batman Begins in black & white. The film would feel so classic, but then we walk into The Dark Knight and the literal opening shot is:

Just imagine how awesome that contrast would be, and what it would represent. Now the criminal is on the same page as Batman and we would realize that with a simple addition of color.
3. Pulp Fiction

This movie utilized familiar genre’s to make a totally unique film, and I think that the subtraction of color could enhance the story telling very well.
2. Catch Me If You Can

Everything about this film shrieks old fashioned, so why not add that extra layer? To be honest, I do think that a lack of color might make the film a little less fun, but the mystery of it all would be a little more prevalent when we’re seeing things though Hanratty’s eyes.
- Brick

I am actually mildly surprised that this was released in color. This was a small budget neo-noir thriller. Everything about that screams black & white. From the dialogue to the characters, from the chase scenes to the absurd humor. Sometimes, I actually turn off the color settings on my television and watch this in black & white… and it’s incredible!
So what would YOU like to see remastered in black & white?
