Star Trek Beyond review
When the Enterprise crashes on a strange planet, the crew must find a way to get back home.
You know, I never really got into Star Trek. I’m sorry. I watched the original motion picture the day after I watched Star Wars for the first time. However, my dad was a huge fan of the original television show so I watched a few episodes and I found them to be really fun. I really liked J.J Abrams Star Trek film and I don’t hate the sequel. I like this cast, and I think that Simon Pegg is a talented screenwriter. So when I saw this film, I was ready for a fun time.
This is a good movie. I had fun watching it! First things first…the visuals. Oh my goodness, this is a beautiful looking film with spectacular, breathtaking visuals. Nothing ever felt like CGI, and I find that to be massively impressive!
Also, this cast! The cast has such compelling chemistry, and it’s a delight to watch all of these guys together. Chris Pine seems like he really hit a groove with the character of Kirk. It was cool to see him being a responsible Captain instead of just a womanizing cool guy who plays by his own rules. Zachary Quinto kills it and usual, but he spends most of the film with Bone, played by Karl Urban. Look, I think Karl Urban is a good actor, but he’s a little ridiculous. I think that Urban is showing the director how far he can go, and no one is pulling him back. Anton Yelchin also did a great job in this film. I saw found him to be incredible in these films and it’s a shame that’s he’s gone so young.
This film was cool! It felt like a fun adventure flick and I really liked that. Now, this new director has an eye for visuals, but not so much for action. The hand to hand combat scene are usually filmed in the dark with a shakey cam close up, so it’s hard to tell what’s going on. Also, this film tries to be really funny in some places, and sometimes that really doesn’t work.
This film is pretty fast paced, but it’s takes about 15 minutes or so to really get going. Idris Elba plays a pretty compelling villain, I just wish that we could have spent more time with him. They flesh out his character a little bit, and that’s cool, I just wish they had done more with him.
This is a fun summer action movie, and if you like that then I think you’ll have fun! Yet, I know that Star Trek is a beloved franchise, so if you want more form your Star Trek movies, then I can understand people not liking this.
