Suicide Squad review

The government must assemble a lethal team of criminals to do the most dangerous jobs.

A few months ago, I posted this article:

To sum it all up, I did not have high hopes for this movie. Then I saw the Rotten Tomatoes score of 27% and I got really nervous. My fear was that this would be another boring entry for DC.

Well, fortunately I was wrong! I had so much fun! In fact, I think that this might be the most fun that I’ve had in theaters this year. No, it’s not the best movie. In fact this isn’t even a “good” movie, but it’s relentlessly fun!

This movie has a really solid cast! Almost everyone is bringing their A game, especially Will Smith. Will Smith is just killing it in this movie. It’s nice to see a return to form from him.

Now, Margot Robbie is good, but I didn’t think she’s as good as everyone is giving her credit for. Still, I would like to see more of this character. Jai Courtney did a good job! Stick to roles like this Jai!

I don’t think that Joel Kinnaman is getting enough credit for his portrayal of Rick Flag. He was pretty good and he had solid chemistry with Smith. Now, I haven’t mentioned two people yet: Viola Davis as Amanda Walker and Jared Leto as the Joker.

Viola Davis SLAYS this performance! She was so scary with her performance and I hope we get to see her again. Now for Jared. It was like they threw every version of the Joker in a blender and then added some kale. Basically, diet Joker. He didn’t get a lot of screen time, so I do think that he has a chance to improve.

Now I know that I spent a lot of time talking about the characters, but that’s because they are the strength of this film. The characters sure are fun, but this movie is a mess. A fun mess, but a mess nonetheless. This feels like a big dumb 90’s action movie with some solid, fun characters.

If you’re into the first shot of this movie, you’re going to have fun. Even though this film is fun, it has a lot of exposition, a sloppy villain, a generic plot, and some really poor editing. It seriously feels like this movie is missing 30 minutes that we need. I really hope that we get a directors cut of this film. Now, I do really like this movies soundtrack, although I do acknowledge that it’s quite silly. Here’s what bummed me out, there’s no fun song doing the big fight scenes and I was really craving that.

At the end of this day, this is like the Mighty Ducks of comic book movies. The Mighty Ducks isn’t a good movie, but it’s super fun and highly watchable! So is this. I can’t wait to pick up the blu-ray and you know what? Maybe I’ll see it in theaters a second time. Fun movie, but it also has a lot of flaws.
