The Hateful Eight review
Eight violent strangers find themselves trapped in a cabin during a blizzard.
Going to see a Tarantino in the theater is a real treat for me. Pulp Fiction changed everything for me, in terms of film, and as a result I’m always excited to see a Tarantino masterpiece on screen. Tarantino usually delivers everything a film lover could want, so going into this movie I had no concerns about this film being bad.
I was right not to be nervous! I loved The Hateful Eight! I’m a big fan of old fashioned westerns and this film is exactly that, with Tarantino’s twist. When was the last time you could say that Samuel L. Jackson was great in a movie? I’ll tell you, The Hateful Eight. You could actually say that for the entire cast! Everyone in this movie understands their character, and every character is disturbingly delightful. The dialogue in this movie is so much fun! Yes, I said fun! It’s Tarantino and old-time-western all wrapped up into one. This three hour movie is mostly dialogue and I wasn’t bored for one second!
Let’s talk about the cinematography. Amazing! Tarantino still shoots on film, and the movie benefits from that. Hateful Eight just looks like a great old western. The flaw with shooting on digital is that sometimes, your movie just looks like a very well made YouTube video. That’s not the case here. This movie looks great!
Now, this isn’t a flawless movie. In fact, something happened in this movie and I was pretty disappointed. Without spoiling anything I will say that when the mystery of the film was revealed, I was a little underwhelmed.
Now, this is a warning for anyone who is interested in seeing this film. This is a Tarantino movie. Blood, violence, language, tons of all the things I just listed. Tons. If you’re not a fan of any of that, or you’re not a fan of Tarantino, I don’t suggest this movie. However, this is a must see for fans of Tarantino, westerns, or great films.
The Hateful Eight-9/10
