This letter is in response to a recent article in the Denver Post: “Colorado health exchange premiums dropping — by a lot.

The governor’s recent announcement that rates for 2020 coverage will drop by a whopping 20% statewide is fantastic news for the many small businesses and solo entrepreneurs in our state that are struggling with their healthcare costs. In particular, the legislature’s bipartisan efforts to pass a reinsurance program, which helps health providers insure the costliest consumers, proved pivotal to stabilizing and lowering healthcare costs.

While this is a critical first step to addressing healthcare costs for our state’s job creators, we need to continue this progress by also expanding their options for coverage. This is why we’re encouraged that the state is considering a public option that includes small group plans. We hope they pursue this option because it would be a significant step toward leveling the playing field for Colorado’s entrepreneurs.
