Many thanks for your thoughtful response and apologies I’ve not replied for ages. I’m glad you found the fractal metaphor helpful.

Some people have interpreted it as a #noestimates post. It wasn’t intended as such, rather I was trying to describe why estimation is commonly hard.

Much of the focus on estimation in the software development community has been focussed on how to estimate more effectively (or indeed how to meet business needs without estimating at all). IME people rarely focus on how to change one’s system so that it is inherently more predictable. That’s my focus, and from your description of technical debt and “superstar” coders it sounds like the system at your workplace rewards practices that result in unpredictability. This is super common.
