Review the doctors

My opensource project

https://github.com/SmritaPokharel1/revewthedoctors

Review the doctors is an application that provides platform for people to rate and review doctors. This application uses different technologies. Firstly it is written in Java EE and Spring framework — Spring MVC , Spring Data Jpa, Spring security. Secondly it uses MYSQL as its underlying database. Thirdly it uses gradle for dependency management. Lastly it uses git for version control.

The code that I have submitted is the initial phase of this application and is not complete. Currently there are two types of users in the project: Admin and User. Admin can create different entities and view them. Update and delete functionality have not been completed as of now. Similarly users can rate and review doctors, search either review or doctors, view the review feed and view information about the doctors.

Technical Details of Review The Doctors:

The problems that review the doctors solve

Nepal has been suffering from political instability for a long time now. Unfortunately, as ours is a nation that is underdeveloped we do not have proper hospitals and clinics here. Normally when upper class Nepalese suffer from any serious ailment they fly to either India, Thailand or any other country to get proper treatment as we do not have a reliable health care system here in the country. Similar is the case for some middle class citizens too. However, the majority of the people here have to deal with the bad health services that they get even after paying decent amount of money . Misdiagnosed conditions have even proved fatal. The truth about any medical conditions is that that it is tricky however with proper analysis many can be correctly identified. But what is awful in Kathmandu and our country as a whole, is the carelessness of doctors because of which many conditions that could have been easily diagnosed have gone unidentified or been misinterpreted. Doctors have mostly become business minded and the whole health care system is in chaos.

Data Source

Nepal Medical Council: I have been talking to government officials to retrieve data of health care professionals from Nepal Medical Council. reviewthedoctors will make use of that data in order to suggest good health care professionals to the users.

Users:Users will review and rate doctors which shall be stored in database. This data will be used to train different machine learning algorithm ,which will be implemented later , to suggest good medical professionals.

Using these datasource, review the doctors will help in finding out good health care professionals.

How the project will help me

Breaking stereotypical beliefs of women in science and technology:

The idea for review the doctors occurred to me in the fall of 2012 after I graduated from Pulchowk Engineering college as a Computer Engineering. I was fresh out of college and I was full of many startup ideas — some profit making ones while others related to social service. That energy was also fueled by sexism that I faced throughout my university years. Out of forty five students three of us were females in my class. “Girls cannot study physics or any hard subject for that matter” was one popular stereotypical belief that many held when I was studying engineering. It was no different in programming. Even though the world has advanced and women have become incredibly successful all over the world, our society is a little backward and still thinks lowly of women. In fact when I was doing well in one of the companies as a Java developer, the CEO confessed to me that he didnot believe that girls could code. However I made him feel differently . Whenever I hear such comments I feel responsible to break such myths .

Budget for my startup company

Although the idea for this application came to me years back, I couldn’t undertake it as I was too busy with my full time job. I even joined one of the premiere software companies of the nation in 2015 March, However, I did not find the job challenging enough and I realized that I wanted to carve my own path.As a result I ended up opening a software company(www.konvergent.co) with a friend of mine. We do not have many female entrepreneurs here in Nepal and if I could win this scholarship and invest the scholarship money in my company I could help in setting a good example in my society.

Publicity

After passing MBBS , a Nepali doctor has to register herself or himself in Nepal medical council. I have been talking to government officials to retrieve of all the doctors registered with the Nepali Medical Council. After doing so I will launch this project which will not just serve as a means to rate and review health professionals but also be a directory of health care service providers. As NMC has not digitized its data, we do not have any platform as such to get such information. Hence I will be able to gain some publicity as soon as I launch this project. As I have recently opened up a software company, getting some publicity will without a doubt help me succeed in my venture.

Learning different technologies

I have just completed the initial phase of this project and there are a lot of things that I need to learn further. I have learnt a lot of different technologies while developing the first phase of this project which has been very beneficial to me. Also I am planning to integrate some machine learning algorithms such as Logistic Regression or SVM to analyze all reviews related to a doctor to categorize them as a whole in reviewthedoctors. This will indeed help me enhance my skills.

Conclusion

In conclusion, reviewthedoctors will not just solve a tiny part of a big health- sector problem in my society but also may help me advance professionally. It will set an example in the society for aspiring female developers and entrepreneurs, people will be able to search good health care professionals, data of medical professionals will be digitized which may help me in getting some recognition and the scholarship money will help me fund my startup company.
