Snapchat Filters — A Complete Guide
It goes without saying, Snapchat is huge. With over 100 million daily active users, they’re quickly growing to become one of the biggest players in the social media space, already overtaking Twitter in such a short period.
For those that are yet to be in the know, what is Snapchat? The main point of difference is the fact that snaps have a limited life span. If I send you a snap, it will only be visible for up to 10 seconds.
Alternatively, if I put a snap as my story, it will be available for 24 hours.
This concept something unheard of in the social media world but because of the fleeting nature of Snapchat, it makes it a much more intimate platform, much closer to a visual Facebook Messanger than an Instagram.
Okay, enough about Snapchat and why it’s so awesome. Let’s get into filters.
Oh, and for those of you who are looking to submit their own custom filter for a birthday, wedding, or event, scroll down to ‘Custom Snapchat Filters’.
Public Snapchat Geofilters
There are two main filter types. The first are public geofilters, or commonly referred to as geofilters. These are public filters that anyone can access and by nature, they’re much more permanent. Someone has designed up uploaded a filter for a certain location or city and now everyone has access to it.
These are public filters that anyone can access and by nature, they’re much more permanent. You’ll be able to access most of them for months, and some have been around since this feature was launched. Something important to remember is they are location-based, so if you are in a different city, or a different country, you’ll be seeing different filters.
Sometimes large companies like Disney Land have actually managed to create public geofilters, and sometimes even smaller events such as weddings. With the release of the new on-demand filters, trying to submit a public geofilter is not the best way to go about getting a custom filter.
With the release of the new on-demand filters, trying to submit a public geofilter is not the best way to go about getting a custom filter. This is mainly because it’s hard to get these public geofilters approved!

Custom Snapchat Filters
The other type of filter is the on-demand geofilter. A lot of people are referring to this as the custom Snapchat filter.
This is where you can design, or get someone else (like us), to design something for you, and submit it to a certain location.
If you’re having a birthday that’s coming up, a baby shower, a wedding, or even as a company you want to get your name out a little, the custom Snapchat filter is a perfect choice.
It’s much easier to submit, and although you do need to pay to host it, it’s quite affordable, starting at $5.
Once you have the filter you want, you simply have to go through the submission process which we’ve outlined below.
Here is a custom filter we designed for Drake for one of his concerts. We’ve got one that we did for Justin Bieber below too!
When submitting it, it’s split into two main categories. For those looking to submit it for an event, you’ll be under ‘personal’. For those submitting it for commercial purposes, you’ll be under ‘business’.
Snapchat defines personal filters as:
- A Personal Geofilter is one that doesn’t include any branding, business marks/names, or logos, and doesn’t promote a business or a brand. You might submit a Personal Geofilter to celebrate a birthday or graduation, for example.
Snapchat defines business filters as:
- A Business Geofilter is one that promotes a business or a brand.
A business geofilter has more requirements to meet. For more information, here are Snapchat’s submission guidelines.
