The Red Bird Project: A Picture Story on Play in Education
My very first experience in teaching was in early childhood education. I actually started more than forty years ago while in high school and continued for eight more years while in university and graduate school. During most of those years I taught in the inner-city of Long Beach, California. I credit the hundreds of four and five year old girls and boys for helping me to know and understand the art and science of meaningful teaching and learning. Most important, my students helped me to understand and appreciate the importance of play in education.
During those years I began a collection of my student’s expressive water color paintings. Each painting told a story about a student or a circumstance. Hopefully by sharing the stories from The Red Bird Project you will be enlightened to make your life and the lessons you share more playful.
More than forty years later I continue to pursue my quest to know and understand the essence of teaching and learning. A constant has been the lessons I learned so many years ago about creating playful classroom environments.
