Over 80 years ago, Amelia Earhart disappeared on her journey… to become the first female pilot to circumnavigate the world. A photo recently unearthed by the History Channel could rewrite history.

Taken in 1937 on the Marshall Islands controlled by Japan, the photograph depicts two caucasians surrounded by locals. Earhart and her navigator may have been taken in as prisoners and died on the island. According to reports, some natives and schoolchildren even claim they saw the plane crash.
