The Purple Heart was first created on August 7, 1782 by the commander-in-chief of the Continental Army, General George Washington. Then known as the Badge of Military Merit, it was awarded to 3 Revolutionary soldiers in 1783.

Veterans often pass down their military awards as keepsakes to family, friends and/or people of their choosing.

The following is a quote from one of Dad’s letters taken from the book, COMES A Soldier’s Whisper :

“I received my Purple Heart today. It’s really a beautiful medal. I pray to God that I may never receive a cluster for it.”

David Clinton Tharp, 101st Airborne, 502nd PIR, Reg. Hq. Radio Operator and Artillery

David Clinton Tharp, 101st Airborne, 502nd PIR, went on to receive a second Purple Heart and that cluster he mentioned along with two Bronze Star medals.
