The Late Post: A Run down of The Day’s Top Stories (19/03/15)
Good evening and welcome to The Late Post. These are the stories that made the news today (while you were occupied). Just in case you missed yesterdays rundown, you can have a quick look here first — if you will.
- The Endangered Currency
As the dollar-to naira exchange rate soars even further, it’s getting increasingly harder for folks to find dollars to exchange their naira for (to begin with). The crunch has hit the foreign exchange market, as companies who deal in the currency are having a hard time converting their naira stocks to dollars. The dollar now sells for around N224 at the black market and the plummeting price of oil is fueling the entire process, as a lot of people are holding on to their dollar stash with the hope that the naira will crash even further. But the the CBN says it intends to keep the naira stable and has a plan that will make the dollar hoarders regret in the end.
2. APC Threaten to Drag GEJ to ICC over OPC
Following a “remove Jega” protest — which went awry — by the Odua People’s Congress in Lagos on Monday, the APC has threatened to drag President Goodluck to the International Criminal Court over the mayhem unleashed by the group, who they allege are sponsored by the PDP. (Pretty sure GEJ must be rueing his Lagos trip now since every scuffle or street mugging in the city from then until the elections may get trumped up on his account).
+The petroleum minister’s kid brother has been kidnapped.
3. Voters in Diaspora Will Not Get a Pass
The FG has put out a statement that it has intel (LOL) on foreigners in possession of permanent voter’s cards looking to come into the country to compromise the electoral process. The Minister of Interior, Mr Abba Moro assures that the borders will be be manned properly to prevent that. (I suppose now that all effort will be channeled towards denying entry to smugglers of PVCs, those smuggling other things will get less scrutiny?)
4. Flying The President Abroad for Medical Treatments Bad for Our Image — Fashola
While commissioning Lagos state’s first Cardiac and Renal Centre on Wednesday decried the appalling state of medical care in the country. He went on to add that “the federal government does not understand that it diminishes our image every time the head of government travels abroad for medical care.”
(The matter is convoluted at the moment, I think. Until we upgrade 0ur healthcare facilities, an ailing president either opts to get treated back here and possibly die with their honour — and our collective image intact or they get standard care abroad while shaming us all. Tough call, that.)
5. The Missing $20billion Conundrum Still Unresoved — Sanusi
The “King in the North”, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi has indicated that the FG hasn’t handled the matter of the alleged missing $20billion he drew attention to while he was the nation’s “Chief of Coin”. (The Iron Throne moved in on him as a result of that issue, by the way.) In his recent interview on the Amanpour show, SLS alluded (alleged?) to the corruption that runs deep and unaccounted for at the nation’s apex financial institution.
+Sanusi is off the mark yet again — NNPC
6. Amaechi Asked For Criminals to be Set Free — CP
As the pre-election tension in Rivers stokes even further, the mudslinging has increased, with the APC alleging that they are targets for assassination. In response to Governor Amaechi’s claim that the police is complicit in the alleged plot to assassinate the APC gubernatorial candidate, the Commisioner of Police delivered a retort that probably matched the initial accusation in levels of grace.
Thanks for checking in. Good night.
Solomon Osadolo.
