Keep on keeping on

Heather, I get frustrated just as you do with being one of the have-nots of Medium, and with how difficult it is to break out of the bottom rungs here. Especially when I see some of the stories that get thousands of readers.

Having said that, I encourage you to keep writing the pieces about the emotional journey you’ve traveled to reach this point in your life. As I’ve said previously, I think you’ve written the best stuff I’ve seen here at Medium. I don’t know what it takes to become a staff pick, but you should focus instead on getting an agent and a book deal and not worry too much about a platform that’s not going to pay you or promote your work.

For that matter, there may be a better platform for you. Whatever you do, keep on writing with an eye to compiling the pieces later in book form (and make sure you’re keeping your own copies because Medium could simply disappear one day, never to return). If you keep the book idea in mind while composing the stories, they’ll fit together nicely when the time is right. And let me know if you leave Medium so I can follow your stuff wherever you’re posting it.

Keep up the good work, and don’t worry. You seem to have a core of committed readers. That’s all any of us really want, I think.
