Holiday Giving
By: Patrick Mackie
My friend (Jake) texted me the other day that he would be able to make some barbecue pulled pork sandwiches and wanted to give them to those in need. He knew of the work I am doing via #povertyinbaltimore and asked me if I would give the food he had to those in need. I asked him if he wanted to go with me and give some joy to those in need. He agreed. He invited his brother along and we headed down to Baltimore City to give some food to those in need a day before Christmas.
December 24th, 2014
My friend Jake, his brother Brady, and their mom made up around 40+ barbecue pulled pork sandwiches and a bunch of cookies. We went out on this gloomy, wet, and rainy Christmas Eve day to bring a little bit of joy to those who might not be fortunate enough to have a warm meal.
I’m grateful they wanted to do this. Everyone deserves a warm meal.
Christmas is tomorrow, yet many people will forget about the poor this holiday season. I wonder why we celebrate the birth of Jesus often without giving to the poor being apart of the conversation.
We all need to give more.

We headed over to a well known homeless area (near the Phoenix Shot Tower) that I would define as the modern day Hoovervilles of Baltimore City. It’s sad to see parents with kids in the area along with people just years younger than me there.

The man above insisted that he was thankful and even if no one else says thank you he says thank you for them. He was very grateful.
We gave out 40+ sandwiches to those in need.

She was very joyous and insisted I take her photograph with the cookie in her hand. Nothing like some holiday cheer to be spread around on a gloomy December 24th day!
