Nike upgrades the uniform template

The University of Oklahoma sported a new uniform template for the 2015 season. The Nike Mach Speed uniform replaced the dated Nike Destroyer cut that had been worn for the previous 7 seasons. While the overall visual change was minimal to most fans, the benefits for the players included a tighter fit, better ventilation and lighter material.

In addition, the “Bring The Wood” alternate uniforms remained a part of the rotation as well. These uniforms remained on the same Nike Speed Machine template as they did the year prior.

As the Sooners came into 2015, it felt like a rebirth in many ways. A new offense, run by newly-acquired wunderkind Lincoln Riley; a new quarterback, the charismatic Baker Mayfield; and for uniform fans, a new Nike uniform template. As the Sooners ran onto the field in their Mach Speed uniforms for the first time, Sooner Nation’s expectations for the 2015 season came into contact with reality for the first time since the disappointing end to the 2014 campaign. While the offense took a while to find it’s footing, ultimately the new-look Sooners were too much to overcome for the Zips of Akron.

In addition to the debut of Oklahoma’s new Nike threads, Akron debuted their new “Fear the Roo” helmet featuring and oversized kangaroo head on the back left side.

Once again the Sooners faced the Volunteers from Rocky Top Tennessee, and once again they found themselves surrounded by a lot of hype. As the chalk talk revolved around the resurgence of Tennessee and the noise-factor of Neyland Stadium, the uniform matchup once again proved to be a classic. While the Sooners donned their classic white look, Tennessee was showing off their new Nike uniforms.

After their Adidas contract ended, the Volunteers received a uniform overhaul complete with custom typography, checkerboard striping and of course, alternate uniforms. While many wondered if Tennessee would break out their “smokey grey” alternates for the first time, or if the Sooners would “Bring the Wood,” for a battle of blue bloods, nothing but the classics would do.

Returning home from a dramatic comeback win in Knoxville, the Sooners looked to continue their winning ways against a Tulsa team from up the turnpike. As is tradition, the Sooners wore their classic crimson/crimson/white look while Tulsa went stormtrooper in all white.

Game 4: Bring the Wood Alternates

For the second time in as many seasons, Oklahoma broke out their alternate uniforms against the Mountaineers. For the third iteration of the Bring the Wood alternates, the Sooners wore yet another unique combo of crimson/crimson/cream. After being embarassed by Baylor in their home alternates the year prior, the Sooners looked to erase some bad vibes from the Rough Rider look. After a fiery start that nearly had the teams brawling before kickoff, the Sooners shut down the upstart WVU offense and found their groove on offense.

One of the most classic uniforms match ups in college football, this edition of the Red River Rivalry featured Texas in their classic burnt orange and white home uniforms against Oklahoma in their classic all-white road uniforms. While not as aesthetically pleasing as the reverse uniform match up (OU in crimson, UT in white), it’s still one of the best looking games you’ll see in college football. Unfortunately for the Sooners, their play on the field did not match the class of their uniforms as they were upset by a struggling Texas squad.

Coming off a disappointing loss to Texas, dealing with an eight hour flight delay, and facing the ghosts of a dumbfounding loss to KSU at home the year prior, Oklahoma had a lot of challenges in front of them as they faced the wildcats in the Little Apple. In one of the best uniform match ups the Big 12 has to offer, the Sooners came out in all white and put on their best performance of the season. They dominated from start to finish getting their season back on track, and winning 55–0.

After traveling to Lubbock and facing a Texas Tech team that sported ombre uniforms, nobody quite new what to expect from the Red Raiders uniforms this time around. Somewhat surprisingly, TTU came out in a fairly restrained black/white/black combination that really shows off what a solid uniform design they have. As expected the Sooners wore their traditional home uniforms as they steamrolled the Raiders in Norman.

For the fourth time since the were first unveiled, it was once again time for the Sooners to Bring the Wood. After a week of teases and speculation, Sooner Nation finally got to lay eyes on yet another new alternate combination. This time? Cream on cream on cream. And what a sight it was to behold. After sketchy shots from the locker room leaked onto twitter appearing to show mismatching shades of cream, it’s safe to say the many were doubting the merits of this uniform combination. But as soon as the Sooners took the field, all those concerns were washed away as we were treated to one of the best uniform combinations OU has ever worn. And for the second straight year, we had an actual reason to get excited about watching the Kansas game.

With College Gameday in attendance, the nation awaited a marquee matchup between a highly touted Baylor Bears squad and a Sooners squad looking to shake the green and gold monkey off their back. After being thumped in the previous two meetings, Oklahoma looked to reclaim their place atop the Big 12 throne from a Baylor team that had worn the crown in recent years. It was a striking game as the Sooners in their crisp white road uniforms faced off against the Bears in their striking blackout set. In the end, the Sooners made more big plays when it mattered and finally beat the bears for the first time in three years.

Returning to Norman in the driver’s seat of the conference, Oklahoma looked to once again avenge a 2015 loss by beating an ailing TCU squad. Despite a slew of injuries, TCU hung in until the final play when they opted to go for the 2-pt conversion and the win which was ultimately swatted away by Steven Parker. While the Sooners wore their classic crimson jerseys, TCU donned their all-white version of their new look for the 2015 season.

As the cards fell into place across the Big 12 conference, the 2015 Bedlam matchup gained a whole new significance. The winner of this game would be crowned Big 12 Champion. After serving the Sooners a heartbreaking overtime loss in 2014, OSU looked to repeat as Bedlam champions and snatch their second conference title. However, OU and their 2015 revenge tour had other plans. Start to finish, the Sooners dominated their in-state brethren and clinched yet another Big 12 Title.

After clinching another Big 12 title, the Sooners earned another honor: a birth in the second College Football Playoff. On the uniform front, Nike once again created Diamond Quest Uniforms for the CFP bound teams. Unlike 2014, which featured new uniforms for Ohio State and Oregon, Nike left teams’ looks alone, save for a faceted diamond swoosh on their jerseys and pants.

With the CFP rankings set, the Sooners once again found themselves with an opportunity to avenge a loss from 2015. Facing the Clemson Tigers in their bowl game for the second time in as many seasons seemed to excite many of the Sooner faithful, but ultimately the Tigers proved to yet again be too much to handle.
