BOOK REVIEW — THE LONGEST NIGHT BY RANATA SUZUKI

It took forever to get to read this book, thanks to the funny mailing system that we have here in Nigeria, I couldn’t get it even after two attempts , and when I finally did, life happened and it took forever to finish it, but I finally did and the word that was on my mind all through was a roller coaster ride, that’s what reading it felt like.
The dedication was the first thing that attracted me, it was unique and different, and really beautiful. The book is in three parts — Sunset, Darkness and First Light, with two bonuses — A Parallel Universe and Addendum.
Sunset was about heartbreak and a love that didn’t last.
Darkness contained details of the heartbreak properly, what it felt like, the bitterness vividly.
First light, which was my favorite part had details of healing, closure and living right again.
For every book I read, there’s a particular thing that I look out for among others , and that’s what makes it different from the last one, and that thing about The Longest Night was its depth, the clarity, imagery and honesty got to me.
It seemed like a book about someone who made a decision to love and really did, hard and sincerely without expecting anything in return, and in fact knowing fully well that it wouldn’t last but diving into it still, to end up broken and later got around it and managed it. About the bonus poems, I loved the delicate way that A Parallel Universe was written, and I loved the light in Addendum, I loved the optimism, it filled me with this sense of triumph for the girl in the book.
The longest night is both a light and a disturbing read, the flow and the beauty of the words would interest you, but also hit you and make you think deeply. I enjoyed reading it and i think you will too.
Finally, It would be selfish of me not to say a big fat thank you to the author, Ranata Suzuki for her efforts to get the book to me, even to want to get it to me, she is the first author to send me a copy of her book for free and it meant a lot, thank you so much!
