Reaching for your iPhone in moments when you feel uncomfortable is a way to disconnect from your emotions by shifting focus to your intellect. Perusing information in your device stimulates your curiosity and thinking, therefore diverting attention from your anxieties. Even if you were to get rid of all external stimulus, you can still shift focus to your intellect simply by thinking, imagining, and creating. A phone, book, or laptop simply makes the process easier. But I’m fascinated with the idea of stripping away external comforts and redisovering one’s inner being. Good luck!
