The Wave

I was driving along
that narrow road
beneath the white cliff,
white as whalebone.
Water behind,
I could just follow that path.

The wave came crawling,
silently rising high up
like a mountain of blue deep.
It stared at me from its top
and said in its deep oceanic tone:

You reckless
You fool
I will swallow you whole
for you came too close.

Silence
Wind blows
and then
it came down
mercifully
dragging me to the depths.
