Spalk Intern Blog: Week 2

Jacob Meyer | June 9, 2017

Wow, this week has flown by. It was a short week, but very busy and exciting nonetheless. It was the Queen’s Birthday here on Monday so we got the day off, which was awesome! The US should look into getting a Queen for this reason alone.

The team (minus me — the photographer) back in action!

When we got back to work on Tuesday it was great to see the whole team hard at work. It was especially cool for us interns because it was the first time that we’ve all been working together at the office. Before, different members of the team had been out of town for various competitions and pitches. It was a really fun and productive environment with everyone here.

One thing is for sure, the Spalk team can eat! Thanks for the sushi Ben :)

To get back into the swing of things, we all went out for a team lunch on Wednesday. I don’t know exactly what causes this, but food bought on the company card DEFINITELY tastes better.

This week we focussed heavily on marketing and social media, but one thing that I am quickly learning about working for a startup is that you always need to be ready to focus or work on something different. This is perfect for me because I love to learn about all the various aspects of business, even though I am focusing on marketing here and at the University of Michigan’s Ross School of Business. On Thursday, I actually got to sit in on a meeting with Spalk and KPMG. It was really interesting to get a taste of all the details and logistics involved with a potential deal like this and to see the broad scope of what goes on behind the scenes when running a business.

My favorite part about working for Spalk so far is the fun environment we create and the fact that everyone’s opinion and voice is valued equally. I love having meetings and brainstorming sessions with my bosses because we all get to contribute unique and helpful ideas to make an impact on Spalk and the world. The experience I’ve gained here in only a short two weeks has been amazing and I can’t wait to see what else I can learn and how I can put it to use when I’m back in the States!

Until next week.

Here’s a cool article that they just put up outside our office, take a look if you want to learn more about our business and its founders!
