QUALITIES OF A GOOD TEACHER

“Tell me I forget, teach me and I may remember, involve me I learn”.

-Benjamin Franklin.

Passionate About Teaching

If you don’t believe in what you are teaching you cannot expect your students to either. You should teach with a real love for your subject and give the impression that you can’t imagine doing anything else.

You should have a wide knowledge of your subject — only the odd question should stump you. Even then, handle tough questions with humility and make sure you come back next lesson with a good answer.

Skilled Classroom Management

Your class needs to be student-friendly. There should be illustrations of some of the concepts you are teaching on the wall as well as examples of students’ work. Students know how the teachers feel about them. If they don’t like them — or if they see them as a behavior problem — they know it. Even if the teachers don’t say it, they will know it. And then that student is justified in resenting them.

Enjoys Teaching

Teaching is meant to be a very enjoyable and rewarding career field (although demanding and exhausting at times!). You should only become a teacher if you love children and intend on caring for them with your heart. You cannot expect the kids to have fun if you are not having fun with them! If you only read the instructions out of a textbook, it’s ineffective. Instead, make your lessons come alive by making it as interactive and engaging as possible. Let your passion for teaching shine through each and everyday. Enjoy every teaching moment to the fullest.

An Excellent Communicator

To be the best possible teacher, you must be an effective communicator . However, in this area, you are not just limited to being a skilled communicator to your students although that is a must. You must also be a strong communicator with the parents of your students. If you have a difficulty communicating with any of these two groups, then you limit your overall effectiveness as a teacher.
