What’s the point of faking it ’til you make it?

Confidence plays a HUUUUUUUGGGGGEEEE (Donald Trump voice) role in essentially everything we do. There’s no denying that. But is confidence a trait which is best faked or carried out authentically?

You may be under qualified, you may not have sufficient experience, you may simply not be the right candidate for the job. If this happens to be the case, what would forging your credentials, your expertise, or even your personality do to improve your chances?

If you’re as fake as a three dollar bill during the job interview, the first date, or even when you first meet new people, don’t you think they deserve to know the real you before investing their time/money/energy?

Maybe you don’t. Maybe you’re an entitled son of a bitch that thinks that the world owes you something. Maybe you justify your actions by saying that you’ve been wronged before and that you’re only returning the favor.

Whatever the case may be, I’m not telling you to be real, all day, everyday.

There are some exceptions where faking it is absolutely acceptable. For example, faking an orgasm during sex, faking injury/illness to get out of helping a friend move, or occasionally telling that little fib. Sometimes, it’s okay to be a little fake.

But if you aren’t authentic most of the time, how are you going to react when shit hits the fan? How are you going to handle yourself when your boss/colleagues/acquaintances discover that you can only be depended on sometimes?

If you’re only being authentic sometimes, I bet you can’t even answer that question truthfully. I bet you don’t even know what you would do. If you only spend some of your life being real , I wouldn’t even believe what you say, anyway.

They say trust is the currency of the new economy. What kinds of relationships are you building when it’s all based on deception, lies, and forgery?

You can fake whatever you want to whomever you want for how ever long you want. That’s not any of my business. But ask yourself this: how long can this go on for?
