We also use a hybrid approach, but a bit differently.
Joint: Savings, Credit Card
Separate: Checking Accounts
Our respective paychecks get deposited in our personal accounts. I pay all of the bills (we tried to have this split in the past, ended up with things getting both double paid and not paid- just needs to be with one human) and so my partner sends me the money needed through the money-transfer ability with our bank (free). We have constant communication about availability of funds, and have a weekly budget for everything that isn’t a bill- this is taken out in mostly cash, with some left on the debit cards for things like gas where cash is a pain.
In short: Constant communication, joint where it makes sense, cash for all day-to-day spending (including groceries)
