Fun? In the office? Right…

I’m sure many of you are thinking the same thing: the moody manager and office grouch make it impossible to have in the office on any given day but, it’s possible! Now, I‘m suggesting that you turn this into an episode of the hit tv show,“The Office” (with supplies placed in Jell-O molds and impossibly complex tricks played on one another). What I am suggesting is that you inject a more humane set of behaviors into the office setting, and make it a far more enjoyable and (gasp!) productive place.

As the owner of Contactzilla has said, “In my experience, team happiness spurs productivity and by making your work environment a ‘happy place’, you can take care of your team and encourage them to get more done.” (GetHppy) And how do you make your team happier? Consider my favorite tips for a fun office environment:

  • Celebrate the wins. Small or large, and sort-of success are good enough to celebrate. Progress is progress; your office does not have to succeed in creating the latest, best or greatest anything. You can celebrate five great online reviews or a great letter from a customer — give your team anything that helps them to feel their work has added value and that everyone has made progress for the company.
  • Create non-work spaces . I have seen small game areas where decks of Uno cards and a few board games create fifteen minutes of bonding, friendship, fun, and relaxation. It takes the pressure off performance and creates a far more conducive atmosphere. In addition to game areas, I have seen lobby spaces where people can enjoy working on hobbies as diverse as scrapbooking or stamp collecting to plotting out complex train journeys or hiking adventures.
  • Weekly check-in. One organization I know has a weekly meeting that includes a meal together and time to share. It doesn’t have to be a Friday evening event, but instead, try a mid-week break that allows everyone to interact off the clock and in a less focused way. It is super productive and amazingly fun.

What you may have noticed in those three steps is the ultimate tip for making the office fun, and that is encouraging friendship. So many of us forget the importance of friends not only in our personal lives, but our business lives as well. Make the office fun, bring a friend of two and remember why you do what you do.
