Billions of people around the world do not have access to cellular or Wi-Fi connectivity due to either an inability to pay or geographical circumstances. However, given the rise of inexpensive smartphones and improved smart device technologies, a completely connected world is at our fingertips. Imagine people in a remote village in India with no access to Wi-Fi or phone services, being able to send location, images, and messages instantly to any member of their community, or a city being able to use ride-sharing and dating apps without needing Internet.
Bridgefy is a software development kit (SDK) that uses a smartphone’s Wi-Fi and Bluetooth antennas to allow data transfer from phone to phone, instead of sending it through a satellite or router. Bridgefy could allow apps like Uber, Whatsapp, and Snapchat to run without cellular or Wi-Fi connection. Bridgefy allows for mesh network communications, so as long as there is a phone approximately every 100m (329 ft) between the sender and receiver, the information “hops” on each device until it gets to the intended party, which is perfect for large cities and small villages.
Based in San Francisco, Bridgefy was cemented in 2014 when they won 2nd place on the Startupbus. From there they were invited to stay at StartupHouse and got some funding to build up their team and continue their operations. Although they have a fantastic service and a strong team, they have ran into problems getting funding due to some venture capitalists who were wary of their Mexican roots, but Bridgefy will thrive regardless of this opposition. Co-founder Jorge Rios said that StartupHouse has helped them through obstacles by giving one-on-one attention, network expanding opportunities, and constant exposure to the tech scene.
