Recovering From Nepal’s Devastating Earthquake

One year ago this week, a 7.8 magnitude earthquake and its aftershocks caused severe destruction and loss of life in Nepal. Though there are no Starwood hotels in Nepal yet, the families of 257 Nepalese associates who are working at Starwood properties in 11 countries were impacted by this natural disaster. To help their families, the Starwood Associate Relief Fund (SARF) provided more than US$1.2 million to those associates to help them recover and rebuild.

Deepak, a dedicated overnight cook at the W Washington DC, has family members who were living in Nepal. His family’s home was completely destroyed, and members of his family, including his uncle who is pictured in rubble, were buried for up to six hours before being rescued.

The SARF grant helped give his family access to emergency housing at a time when they needed it most.
