The adult content industry, since a strong impulse for development in the second half of the 20th century, has been and remains not only one of the most closed and “forbidden”, but also one of the most profitable. With the development of the Internet and social networks, the volume of adult content has increased greatly, and quality, on the contrary, has declined.

However, this had both a positive and negative effect on the industry — some of the players were forced to leave the market, unable to withstand competition, but those who stayed, only strengthened their dominance due to the high quality of content and a serious approach to business.

The best indicator of the situation on the market and the popularity of content for adults are figures:

  1. Every year, 37% of Internet users visit adult sites at least once. The statistics does not include users who view erotic photos and videos exclusively from social networks.
  2. 70% of men aged 18–24 visit adult sites every month.
  3. 35% of Internet searches refer to the adult content.
  4. In a month, adult sites collectively get 4.4 billion views.
  5. The total volume of traffic of erotic resources is 4% of the global. Adult category is the seventh most popular, overtaking computer games, sports and travel.
  6. Banner advertising erotic sites is among the most effective, ranking fourth and second only to gambling and video games, as well as shopping.
  7. More than 70% of erotic content is controlled by 20 companies.
  8. Every thousandth user of the Internet or cable TV in developed countries uses a paid subscription to an erotic site or channel.
  9. Only on the Internet, adult content brings revenue of 4.9 billion dollars a year.

As statistics show, adult content is not only popular, but also capable of generating huge profits. Users with low paying capacity often look for adult content through social networks and are not considered in some statistical studies. At the same time, most of the connoisseurs of quality content are solvent, and prefer to visit specialized sites.

It is believed that it was the sex industry that became the reason behind development of photo and video technologies, the popularization of VHS-tapes and DVDs. Much of the Internet transactions is also associated with the payment of content for adults (accurate data is not provided, since this data is more confidential). Given these facts, the introduction of erotic content to the blockchain is a logical next step in the evolution of the industry.
