I used to work closely with executives and was amazed at how fast they moved through meetings. I think the higher-up you go, the more important brevity, honesty, and clarity about the issue or purpose becomes. I.e. being real. No one has time at the exec level. In the lower ranks of organizations there’s more time to get to know the team, and dig deeper on issues – in fact that’s what you should be doing so that whatever you’re bringing to the boss’s table is solid.
You should be prepared for 3 types of meetings with exec:
- your meeting got cut short (instead of 30 minutes, you have 5)
- your meeting is the exact length it was scheduled for
- your meeting time has doubled because your boss is super interested in the topic and wants to get into the weeds with you (1hour+)
