International hedge fund strategies are as varied as the countries in which they originate. Oftentimes, it can be beneficial to have a manager that is intimately familiar with various global localities, as this can ensure a truly objective assessment of the potential risks involved. It is important to note that financial instruments abroad may be the same or similar to the types of instruments available in your country of origin, but regulations may be very different. You will need to have a fund manager who is familiar with the laws as they pertain to each locality, and who can ensure adherence to those laws.

Strategies used by these types of Emerging hedge fund managermay place developing economies in a direct hedge against already-established markets. Natural resources, emerging technologies, opportunities for business development, and infrastructure may all play a role in the decisions behind the international strategy. In some instances, these funds will contain many of the same instruments that you may have available locally, but will also take advantage of foreign trading and currencies and the discrepancies in pricing that can occur.

The same due diligence is necessary when dealing with international hedge funds as with hedge funds in your country of origin. You want to be certain that you understand how the strategies in the fund will be enacted, what types of investments will be the focus of the fund, and what types of returns have been made historically. There are many talented fund managers overseas, and you will want to be certain that your fund is being managed by someone with the same level of experience and knowledge that you expect with domestic funds.

The risks of international trading are not inherently worse than with domestic trading, so long as there is proper research, and the rewards can be far greater. Because emerging markets can often have record growth in the early years, a substantial investment can result in exceptional returns. Internationally regulated funds can offer an extra level of assurance that your investment is being handled properly, while still giving you the necessary flexibility to take full advantage of the global market and the opportunities that are available. Regardless of which type of strategy your international hedge fund manager employs, you will want to ensure that it meshes well with your overall investment strategy. Take the time to explore your options before you commit and be ready to spend some time objectively assessing the overall risk versus the return for your investment. You may find that a reputable international fund makes more sense than a comparable domestic fund when it comes to evaluating your potential returns.
