Maybe score the Hubs, too…
Great article & thanks for the fascinating number-crunching. You must have watched all the movies and been left with time on your hands!
I usually fly Emirates — why? Better FF benefits, flat beds on most flights to UK/US, best in-flight entertainment & better prices than most.
Qatar & Etihad are good too, but Emirates better because of the above + the quality of the airport/hub facilities. A layover at Abu Dhabi feels like a long wait. A layover at Doha feels like a long wait in a bus depot but a layover at DBX is like visiting a spa with a smorgesbord.
Don’t get me started on my two least favourite hubs… ok… go-on. LHR is like someone gave the designer a copy of Alice in Wonderland as brief, spiked their orange juice with LSD and then forced them to play 3D Monster Maze for a year.
Makes no sense. Misleading direction boards. Shitty inter-terminal links and cold, greasy cups of tea. And everythings bloody closed half the time…
Bombay is simply threatening — edgy guys with body odor and automatic weapons. Dreadfully slow checkpoints at regular intervals.
And don’t think of taking your teenage daughter along via BOM if you don’t want her ogled.
Schiphol is wonderful, but KLM’s planes are typically Dutch: kind of spartan. Their pan-European citylink add-on flights are excellent.
The trick you are missing perhaps is to fly Cathay to Hong Kong.
Hong Kong is the world’s best airport hub, IMHO. Tiny airports like Flint, Humberside or London City, Rotterdam Zestienhoven are wonderful but even more time consuming than epicly-efficient HKG.
= my 2 (HK)$ cents worth.
