If a startup uses an advisor's name without permission, is that akin to identify theft?

How many entrepreneurs have referenced an advisor’s name without first having an official agreement with them?

I have! — but learnt my lesson. It may seem harmless, but in reality I think it can cheapen the advisor’s name & yours.

I had talked to an advisor who had the experience of other entrepreneurs using her name without permission i.e. even referring to her as their CFO (when she wasn’t). So the negative effects, which could be akin to identify theft, dawned on me.

Then I realised I too had used some peoples’ names (in a very limit format) but still without explicit permission — so I removed the names and apologised to those whose names I’d used! Lesson learnt.
