The fatal flaw here is the assumption that religion provides spiritual guidance. No, it does not. Religion is a set of doctrines based on a sacred book. Spirituality is the polar opposite of religion. We do not need religion at all; that has and remains a disaster. We need spirituality to transform knowledge into wisdom. Religion is intrinsically divisive, setting up doctrinal walls between people; spirituality is intrinsically unifying, not just among the people of the Earth but all sentient life and even the planet itself. Science and technology give us capabilities; spirituality helps us use those capabilities wisely.
