I believe there is a lot of truth in what you wrote. Many degrees are very bad investments of time and money. Vocational degrees, like medical professionals, engineers, accountants or lawyers still can offer a return on investment that beats self education on average, I’d argue. But those professions do not interest the majority of people. And while those jobs can be fulfilling and lucrative for some, as chemical engineering was for me, many of my fellow engineers did not enjoy their jobs and wished they had followed their passion instead. I think that reality is transitioning in your direction and what sounds novel to an old guy like me is going to sound routine in the very near future.
