Amid rumors of a potential trade involving Carmelo Anthony, one of the Knicks’ premier players, the team signed veteran free agent forward Michael Beasley to add to its frontcourt depth. A native of Frederick, Maryland, and alumnus of Kansas State University, Beasley was the second overall pick in the 2008 NBA Draft. The first overall pick that year, Derrick Rose, played for the Knicks last season, but recently signed with the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Because of his draft status, Beasley was viewed as a potential star in the making upon entering the league. He averaged 13.9 points per game in 2008–09 and was named to the league’s All-Rookie team that season. Two years later, he recorded a career-high 19.2 points and 2.2 assists per game. His point-per-game average declined in each of the following three seasons, but he enjoyed somewhat of a career renaissance last season with the Milwaukee Bucks. Coming off the bench, Beasley averaged 9.4 points per game and shot a career-high 42 percent from three-point range.
